Some children seem to take to reading with no effort, while other children would rather do almost anything than read. If you are a teacher, teacher-in-training, or a parent interested in ways to inspire those reluctant young readers in your life, then this list is sure to offer valuable information for you. From tips for parents and teachers to online resources and books that teach creative tips, there is plenty here that will help you to find creative ways to inspire your young readers.

Tips for Parents

Browse through this list to find out all the fun ways parents can inspire their young readers.

Visit the library regularly. A weekly trip to the library, whether for story time or to select a book to check out, is a great way to establish a reading habit.

Read aloud. Read aloud to your young reader or pre-reader to instill the love of a good story.

Use puppets. Simple sock puppets can do wonders to bring a story to life.

Read with animation. Use different voices or hand and body motions to bring the story to life.

Find books with humor. Books that make children laugh are more engaging, so find books with plenty of humor.

Audio books. Listen to books with your young readers. Hearing a story while in the car or while eating dinner is a great way to inspire young ones to seek out stories.

Support their interests. If you young reader loves cars or ballet, then let him or her select books that will teach them more about their passions.

Beautiful illustrations. Select books with beautiful illustrations to bring the stories to life. Books by Lois Ehlert and Eric Carle are great examples.

Show by example. Let your young readers see you reading. They will learn by the example you set.

Offer books related to travel. If your family is going on a trip, find age-appropriate books about the region to inspire your child for both reading and the vacation.

Provide access. Have books and age-appropriate magazines available for your young readers at all times.

Set a reading routine. Whether you like reading before bed or just after dinner, find a reading routine that works for your family and stick with it every day.

Appreciate any reading. If you have a reluctant reader who only wants to read comics, then embrace the reading he does want to do.

Limit media. Television, computer time, and video games can quickly eat up all of a child’s free time. Limit the amount of media you allow your child and you will free up time for reading.

Tips for Teachers

Teachers, try some of these ideas in your classroom to help your young readers get off to a great start.

Integrate non-fiction in the classroom. Read non-fiction, then integrate non-fiction by thinking aloud about what you read, bringing play into what was learned, and making your own non-fiction tools.

Create a special reading place. Have a section of your room devoted only to reading. Make it comfortable and inviting, with plenty of books available.

Invite guest readers. Parents, local authors, or any other interested people make great guest readers that will invite new perspectives on reading. Ask them to bring their favorite book to expand your repertoire.

Use poetry. Children are drawn to poetry, so take advantage of this to use poetry as an inspiration for learning about words and reading.

Read backwards. Select a paragraph and have students read the words from the end of the paragraph to the beginning. This forces them to focus on the words instead of skimming over memorized parts they already know.

Read aloud no matter what age. Reading aloud to older students has benefits too, so don’t let a little thing like age stop you from reading to your students.

Talk about what you read. Reading aloud isn’t enough. Be sure to talk about what you are reading before, during, and after reading.

Offer an author workshop. Visiting authors willing to come into your class for a workshop are an effective way to motive readers.

Online Resources

These online resources are great for teachers and parents. Even better, most of them are free.

Young Readers’ Toolkit. Based on the 2009 National Book Festival, this resource offers activities for students, lists of books to read, and much more.

NCFL Free Resources. The National Center for Family Literacy offers several free resources for educators. These range from early childhood to adult literacy.

Songs for Building Reading & Language Art Skills. This resource offers links to tons of fun ways to use music for promoting reading.

Puppy Readers. These electronic books match music with animation to help children learn to read. Some are available free of charge while others are available for a fee.

SpellingCity. This online game makes learning and practicing spelling fun.

Writing Activities to Inspire Reading

Writing is an integral part of reading, so try these creative ways to excite your readers.

Make your own ABC books. Have young readers draw each letter and have fun collecting pictures to match the corresponding letter.

Do dot-to-dots. These puzzles help beginning writers draw diagonal lines and other shapes that are more difficult.

Create your own story. After reading a book, have the child make up her own ending or provide a prompt for him to write his own story.

Sensory alphabet. If your young reader is just learning to write, have him draw letters in shaving cream, a plate of sugar, or some other type of medium that has a strong sensory aspect to it.

Make a book log. Have young readers create a reading log including the name of the book, author, and what they liked about the book.

Right writing. Have students write a story on the right side of a spiral notebook and illustrate it on the left side. Then have them read their story to the class with the notebook folded so that the listeners can also view the illustration.

Don’t worry about spelling. Creative spelling is okay in young readers and writers. Allowing them to get their thoughts out and use spelling that feels right for them is an important precursor to better spelling and reading in the future.

Find a pen pal. Having a pen pal with whom to communicate is a strong motivator for both writing and reading.

Write online. There are many opportunities for children and teens to get their writing online–some for children as young as Kindergarten.

Getting money for college all starts here … with the FAFSA.

The FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid, is the jumping-off point for all federal financial aid.

» To complete your FAFSA online, go to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.

You MUST submit a FAFSA to be considered for federal financial aid — grants, work-study, federal student loans, and federal parent loans.

Many states and schools also require you to complete a FAFSA in order to be considered for institutional financial aid and state-funded grants, college loans, and tuition assistance programs.

The FAFSA examines your family’s financial situation and evaluates your eligibility for student financial aid based on U.S. Department of Education guidelines. The FAFSA looks at a number of financial factors, including your and your parents’ income, net assets, family expenses, the number of family members in your household, and the number of siblings attending college at the same time.

Don’t count yourself out and pass up getting easy money for college: Fill out the FAFSA even if you think there aren’t any financial aid options available to you. You and your family may well be eligible for some form of financial aid, even if you think your parents earn too much. Some types of federal student aid — unsubsidized Stafford student loans and PLUS parent loans — are available regardless of financial need.

To increase your chances of receiving financial aid, submit your FAFSA as soon after January 1 as possible. Funds for need-based financial aid are limited, and manyt awards are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Your FAFSA filing date holds your place in federal, state, and school queues, so the sooner you file, the greater your chances of getting financial aid.

The application generally process takes about two to six weeks. Use this time to start searching for scholarships and grants.

Don’t forget: You must complete the FAFSA each year in order to be eligible for financial aid for the new academic year.

To complete a FAFSA, use FAFSA on the Web at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ or submit a FAFSA through your high school or college Financial Aid Office.

When scholarships and grants aren’t enough to cover your college costs, student loans can help you fill in the gaps and provide the remaining financial aid you need.

Student loans come in two principal varieties: government-issued federal student loans and non-federalprivate student loans.

FEDERAL STUDENT LOANS

Federal student loans are issued by the U.S. Department of Education to help students pay for college as well as post-baccalaureate graduate studies. Federal student loans are available in varying loans amounts to both undergraduate and graduate students and can be issued both with and without regard to financial need.

Most government student loans don’t require either a credit check or a co-signer, although there are some graduate student loans that are credit-based and will require you to have an acceptable credit history.

Federal college loans are also available to qualifying parents of undergraduate students.

Federal education loans can be either subsidized or unsubsidized:

With subsidized student loans, the government will cover your interest charges while you’re in school or in an authorized period of deferment (during which your student loan payments are postponed).

With federal unsubsidized student loans, although you won’t have any payments due while you’re in school or in an authorized period of deferment, interest charges will continue to accrue. Once you need to begin repaying your unsubsidized student loans, the accrued interest will be added to your principal loan balance and capitalized, meaning you’ll now be accruing interest charges on the previously accrued interest, as well as on your original loan balance.

Undergraduate Student Loans

There are two types of federal college loans for undergraduates: Perkins loans and Stafford loans. Both loans require that you fill out the FAFSA in order to be eligible. There’s no credit check or co-signer required for either Stafford student loans or Perkins student loans.

Perkins student loans are awarded to eligible low-income students. Perkins loans carry a fixed interest rate of 5% and are available in loan amounts of up to $5,500 for each year of your undergraduate studies. Perkins student loans are subsidized loans.

Stafford student loans are awarded both with and without regard to financial need. Financially eligible undergraduates will qualify for subsidized Stafford loans. Unsubsidized Stafford loans, on the other hand, are awarded without regard for financial need.

Subsidized Stafford student loans carry a fixed interest rate of between 3.4% and 6.8%, depending on when your loan was issued to you, and are available in loan amounts of up to $5,500 a year, depending on your year in school.

Unsubsidized Stafford student loans carry a fixed interest rate of 6.8% and are available in loan amounts of up to $12,500 a year, depending on your year in school and on whether you’re financially independent or a dependent of your parents.

Graduate Student Loans

There are three types of federal graduate student loans: Perkins loans, Stafford loans, and Grad PLUS loans. All three federal graduate loan programs require that you fill out the FAFSA in order to be eligible.

There’s no credit check or co-signer required for either Stafford graduate loans or Perkins graduate loans. Grad PLUS loans, on the other hand, have modest credit requirements and will require you to undergo a credit check. If you can’t qualify on your own for a Grad PLUS loan, you may need a creditworthy co-signer.

Perkins graduate student loans are awarded to eligible low-income graduate students and are available in loan amounts of up to $8,000 a year. Like undergraduate Perkins loans, Perkins graduate loans carry a fixed interest rate of 5%.

Stafford graduate student loans, like undergraduate Stafford loans, are awarded both with and without regard to financial need. Financially eligible graduate students will qualify for subsidized Stafford graduate loans. Unsubsidized Stafford graduate loans are awarded without regard for financial need.

All Stafford graduate student loans, both subsidized and unsubsidized, carry a fixed interest rate of 6.8%. Subsidized Stafford graduate loans are available in loan amounts of up to $8,500 a year, while unsubsidized Stafford graduate loans are available in loan amounts of up to $20,500 a year.

Grad PLUS graduate student loans are designed to cover up to 100% of your cost of attendance and are awarded without regard to financial need. Grad PLUS loans are unsubsidized and carry a fixed interest rate of 7.9%.

Parent Loans

Federal parent loans, known as PLUS loans (“Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students”), are available to qualifying parents of undergraduate students. PLUS loans have modest credit requirements and will require your parent to undergo a credit check. Parents who don’t qualify for a PLUS loan may obtain a creditworthy co-signer in order to help them qualify.

PLUS parent loans are awarded without regard to financial need in loan amounts that will cover up to 100% of the student’s cost of attendance. PLUS loans are unsubsidized and carry a fixed interest rate of 7.9%.

PRIVATE STUDENT LOANS

Private student loans are credit-based loans issued by banks and private lenders rather than by the federal government. Private student loans are available for both undergraduates and graduates, as well as eligible international students and continuing education students.

Qualifying For A Private Student Loan

Although you don’t need to fill out the FAFSA in order to qualify for a private student loan, as you do for federal student loans, you will need to undergo a credit check. You may need a creditworthy co-signer in order to qualify.

And in most cases, even once you’re approved for a private education loan, your school will need to certify the loan — essentially, letting the lender know that you do, in fact, need a private student loan and approving the loan amount you’ve applied for — before the student loan money will be disbursed. In the case of school-certified private student loans, the funds will generally be sent to your school rather than directly to you.

(Keep in mind that although private lenders themselves don’t require the FAFSA from applicants for private student loans, your school may require that you use your federal financial aid options — which do require you to file a FAFSA in order to be considered — before your financial aid office will certify a private loan for you.)

Private Student Loans Vs. Federal Student Loans

Private student loans typically carry variable interest rates, unlike federal college loans, which are all fixed-rate loans. Private student loans also generally come with less-flexible repayment options and fewer built-in borrower protections than federal loans.

Because private student loans can end up being pricier and riskier than federal student loans, you should make sure to take advantage of all your federal financial aid options before you turn to private loans.

If, after scholarships, grants, and federal college loans, you still have school expenses to meet, private student loans may be able to provide the additional education financing you need.

Art History Career Guidance

General Advice

Speak with your advisor (undergraduate or graduate, depending on your status) to learn more about career possibilities, to find out how best to prepare for particular jobs, and for tips on the application and interview process.

The internet has created many opportunities to learn about jobs quickly and efficiently. You can subscribe to a service offered by H-Net (Humanities and Social Sciences OnLine) to be notified of jobs that meet the criteria you select. You can also hear about opportunities by joining a listserv in a given field-see the references to individual listservs in the “Prospects” section of the profession that interests you. Joining one of those listservs also is a great way to find out about the issues, concerns, and opportunities in a particular field.

You might also consider joining the College Art Association (CAA), the professional organization for art historians and studio artists; graduate students should certainly join this organization. Student memberships are available at a reduced rate. The CAA publishes listings of jobs online for holders of the Ph.D. or M.A.

For People with a B.A. in Art History

Commercial art gallery or auction house

Special requirements: Since most galleries deal in contemporary work, some expertise in modern is desirable. If interested in sales positions, strong public relations skills are important. Prospects: Extremely competitive, especially in major centers like New York and Los Angeles; pay is often low. Benefits: Work around cutting edge art; excitement of the hunt for possible sales; occasional travel. Duties: All aspects of gallery work-keeping track of finances, planning displays and exhibitions, researching works of art, writing catalogs, sales, and packing and shipping works of art.

Antique gallery Special requirements: Familiarity with decorative arts a big plus. Prospects: Similar to art galleries. Benefits: Hands-on contact with historical material; tracking down and identifying objects for sale can be great fun; occasional travel. Duties: Similar to art galleries (but less likelihood of catalog writing opportunities).

Museum work (lower level administration and/or smaller institutions) Special requirements: Student internships are an excellent means of getting one’s foot in the door; D.U.’s program offers chances for such internships at the Denver Art Museum and at corporate collections-see your advisor for details; for a list of internship opportunities outside of this region, scan through the job listing sites below (under “Prospects”); also consider joining the Museum Listserv MUSEUM-L [send an e-mail to listserv@unmvma.unm.edu with "subscribe Museum-L [your name]” in the body of the message]. Prospects: Positions are competitive; for listings, see the jobs section of the Museum Resource Board, the Employment Resources Online published by Aviso (a newsletter for museum professionals), or the CAA’s online job listings and check out these Museum Job Hunting Tips. Benefits: Can be a good means of launching a career in the museum world (but will need an additional degree to advance far). Duties: Administrative assistant; fund-raising; financial management; editing; light research.

Art book editing and publishing Special requirements: Meticulous work habits and strong writing skills; having some sort of editing experience (e.g. on the college newspaper) is very helpful. Prospects: Small industry mostly limited to New York and Boston; free-lance work sometimes available but doesn’t pay terribly well. Benefits: Satisfaction of concrete product when done; exciting region of the country to live in; occasional travel. Duties: Editorial (proofreading, fact checking); bibliographic research; finding and researching illustrations.

Magazine publishing Special requirements: Strong writing skills; examples of published work a must. Prospects: Expanding field (especially in the case of regional publications). Benefits: Satisfaction of finished product; set your own hours in the case of free-lance work. Duties: Editing; writing.

Local arts agencies Special requirements: Self-motivation; entrepreneurial skills; strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well under pressure. Prospects: Opportunities in a wide variety of organizations, from fine arts agencies to work in underprivileged communities; short-term projects are often available. Benefits: Good networking opportunities; pay is often low. Duties: Wide range, from public relations and publications to grant writing and office work.

Grant writer Special requirements: Clear, concise writing skills; good communication skills; creative ideas; specific training as grant writer is helpful (grant writing classes are available through a variety of colleges and universities including low-cost options like Colorado Free University); previous work experience (you can volunteer for a small nonprofit to gain this experience and to develop a track record); knowledge of budgeting; organization and self-discipline. Prospects: The demand for development directors is high, but competition for positions is also stiff. Most nonprofits are looking for experienced people. Contract grant work is also in demand if you are motivated and are willing to be an independent contractor. In many cases, a person has to make the initial inquiry with nonprofits. Contract work is not always widely publicized. Benefits: Grant writers have the ability to affect programming which is exciting. There is a level of stress to meet continuous deadlines. They have a great deal of flexibility as independent contractors. Duties: Research funding prospects; develop funder prospects and a funding calendar; create programming; write draft proposals; edit and finalize proposals; review (and occasionally develop) budgets.

With at least a B.A. in Art History and an Additional Degree in Another Field

Art Law Special requirements: A Law degree, optimally from a program specializing in art law and intellectual property rights (for example, from Columbia University’s Kernochan Center for Law, Media and the Arts. Prospects: Good-a growing field. Benefits: Deal with very important issues and get paid well doing so. Duties: Offer legal representation to museums, arts organizations, and/or individual artists; serve as legal consultant (and possibly courtroom representative) in cases dealing with the repatriation of artwork stolen during wars; NAGRPA issues; copyright issues; contracts for public works of art; etc

Art investment Special requirements: An MBA or finance degree can be helpful (but is not always required). Prospects: Fair (art not always the best investment); may be able to set up business as consultant to both dealers and collectors (possibly including major corporations). Benefits: High salary; buy art with other people’s money! Duties: Evaluate trends in market for all types of art; advise clients on potential increases in value.

Archive management or art reference librarian Special requirements: A Master of Library Science Degree (MLS) may be required; computer skills necessary. Prospects: Fair. Benefits: Provide valuable service to other scholars; can involve intriguing detective work and research into a subject that interests you. Duties: Manage collections of photographs, manuscripts, books, and other resources; advise researchers; some publication opportunities.

Conservator Special requirements: Degree from a conservation graduate program (of which there are four in North America: the University of Delaware, the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, Buffalo State College, and Queen’s University in Ontario). The degree demands strong knowledge of chemistry, languages, studio art and laboratory techniques, often some knowledge of physics, a steady hand, and lots of patience. DU’s BFA in Pre-Art-Conservation can be an excellent preparation for graduate work in the field. Prospects: Heavy competition for institutional positions; more prospects in private practice; opportunities vary by region (i.e. best in areas with high concentrations of institutions, dealers, and collectors; often jobs are listed on the Museum Employment Resource Center, on the Employment Resources Online published by Aviso (a newsletter for museum professionals), or in the jobs section of the Museum Resource Board. Benefits: Constant close contact with works of art; pay is good (but you won’t get rich!). Duties: Preserve and repair works of art; you generally develop a specialization (e.g. works on paper; furniture; etc.).

With an M.A. in Art History

Note that with an MA you can find work in any of the fields listed for BAs, and probably have a stronger chance of getting a job in one of those fields or of entering at a higher level. DU’s own MA program in art history is a great place to obtain this degree!

Museum work – curatorial staff Special requirements: Previous experience (as an intern or as staff member) is strongly desirable. Prospects: The job market is competitive but not impossible, due to the variety of museum’s and cultural institutions that exist; for listings see the jobs section of the Museum Resource Board, the Employment Resources Online published by Aviso (a newsletter for museum professionals), or the CAA’s bimonthly Careers bulletin; also consider joining the Museum Listserv MUSEUM-L [send an e-mail tolistserv@unmvma.unm.edu with "subscribe Museum-L [your name]” in the body of the message]. Also, check out these Museum Job Hunting Tips. Benefits: First-hand contact with works of art; opportunities for research and publication; opportunity to introduce the public to the art that you care about. Duties: In smaller institutions you may be in charge of an entire department (e.g. Painting; Decorative Arts; etc.); in a larger institution you may be given more focused research or administrative tasks.

Museum work – administration Special requirements: See above; financial experience may also be a plus. Prospects: See above. Benefits: Sense that you are contributing to the preservation of works of art and to educating the public about them; work in a museum environment. Duties: All manner of administrative work-from serving as a registrar and keeping track of new objects, to managing an institution’s finances, to engaging in fund-raising; in smaller institutions you may be doing multiple jobs.

Museum work – education department Special requirements: See above. Prospects: See above. Benefits: Opportunities to introduce members of the public to the works of art in your institution. Duties: Design educational programs for all age levels, from public school students to adult visitors; can also include public presentations (either on guided tours or in lecture format).

Work in a cultural institution (such as a historical house or center) Special requirements: Special knowledge of the particular field addressed by the institution. Prospects: Opportunities exist in a variety of settings. Benefits: The chance to introduce members of the public to the period that interests you; sense that you are preserving the past for future generations. Duties: Various-can include designing educational programs and publications; research; lecturing or giving tours; maintenance of collections.

Visual resources curator Special requirements: In addition to the MA in Art History, a Master of Library Science degree (MLS) may also be desirable, but it is not necessary; occasionally it is possible to be hired in this field without an MA, but in such cases you must have some other means of demonstrating that you are deeply familiar with the history of art; some previous experience in a slide collection is essential. knowledge of digital imaging processes, databases and intellectual property rights are increasingly important. Prospects: Good and improving; the technological revolution of the past few years has greatly expanded opportunities in this field as universities have seen the need for electronic visual resources, and with the increasing technology component of the field has come a greater level of professional respect within the institution; for job listings, see the CAA online job listings, or the Visual Resources Association Bulletin and listserv. Benefits: Spend all day looking at (albeit in reproductions) and learning about works of art; work with technology; generally in a college or university setting. Duties: Manage collection of slides and visual resources in other media (for instance, web management sometimes part of the job).

Teaching – community college or high school (most likely private) Special requirements: Teaching experience is a plus; to obtain a job in one of the few public high schools that offer art history you need a teaching certificate for that state. Prospects: Fair, particularly in areas with large numbers of community colleges, but those colleges are finding more and more that they can hire Ph.D.s to teach their classes (due to the relative glut of Ph.D.s at the moment); for listings, see the CAA Careers bulletin or the weekly on-line listings from the Chronicle of Higher Education (previous week’s listings available without subscription) or H-Net; if you are paid as an adjunct, the salary can be very low. Benefits: Teach classes on the subject that you love; many community college students are “non-traditional” students, who can be among the most rewarding to work with. Duties: Teach a large number of classes per year; little expectation (or opportunity) for research in your field.

Art Librarian Special requirements: Usually also requires an MLS. Prospects: Fair; for job listings and discussion of the profession, consider subscribing to ARLIS-L (the Art Libraries Society discussion list). Benefits: Work in a college or university setting; chance to play a key role in art education; occasional opportunities for research of your own. Duties: Maintain and expand collection of printed and electronic resources; assist students and faculty in their research in a variety of ways.

With a Ph.D. in Art History

Teaching Special requirements: Teaching experience (for instance, as a teaching assistant while in graduate school) and publications are strongly desirable. Prospects: Competition is intense for the most desirable jobs; for listings, see the CAA online job listings or the weekly on-line listings from the Chronicle of Higher Education (previous week’s listings available without subscription) or H-Net. Benefits: Work in a college or university setting; teach, research, and write about the material that you love. Duties: Generally includes three basic categories of Duties: teaching, scholarship (publication of articles and books, presentations at conferences), and service (serving on campus committees); the ratio between these three categories will depend on the nature of the institution.

Museum work – curatorial (major institution) Special requirements: Considerable previous museum experience is strongly desirable. Prospects: Competition is fierce for the best jobs, but good jobs do open up with some frequency, so with a Ph.D. in an applicable field from a strong institution, it is possible to find a rewarding position; for listings see the jobs section of the Museum Resource Board, the Employment Resources Online published by Aviso (a newsletter for museum professionals), or the CAA’s online job listings; also consider joining the Museum Listserv MUSEUM-L [send an e-mail to listserv@unmvma.unm.edu with "subscribe Museum-L [your name]” in the body of the message]. Also, check out these Museum Job Hunting Tips. Benefits: In addition to the benefits of a curatorial position listed above (under “careers for art history M.A.s”), you can find yourself in an institution that places a high value on the organization of impressive shows, with accompanying research and publication opportunities. Duties: Organize, research, and write catalogs for exhibitions; close involvement in acquisition of works for museum’s collection.

Let’s face it. We all love the hum of a perfectly oiled and ready-to-roar engine. Everyone loves to drive at least a little above the speed limit. And many of us have our special secret passion, be it for Audis or that one Rolls Royce that surprised you with its beauty as a kid. We care for cars!

The Five Best – The Rest of the Best

The Five Best

Paul Tan’s Automotive News. Now, we understand that this is not a blog that will be particularly helpful for American car lovers, as Mr. Tan’s site specifically addresses the latest and hottest automotive news to hit Oceania. But we chose this site since it should be a model for auto news blogs here stateside. The coverage is consistently on offer to readers, and always dynamic—we come away with new appreciation for a feature car every visit. An example of a Tan-penned revelation? Here’s a nifty feature on a blazing BMV model that has yet to hit American soil.

The Old Car Blog. Click on this link, but do not scroll down. Not for at least a few seconds, anyway. Just gaze at the introductory photo, of an old, beaten-down truck’s front hood and grille. It’s ancient, yes. But isn’t it still kind of…beautiful?! That sensation of the old car becoming ogle-worthy happened to us time and time again on this site. Count as one of the web’s best blog sites about any quirky topic. Our favorite post mentioned that radio-fueled autos may solve the gas problem. Not true, but truly cute and quaint.

No Fenders — Formula 1 and Indy Car Racing Blog. Admittedly, we have no interest in the auto racing scene. Or, wait, let’s admit it: We had none, not until we came across this outstanding blog. Head writer Tomaso has been impassioned by vehicular races for more than twenty years. That decades-long dedication pays off with such interesting features as Maybe Indy Car Should Stay Away, a must-read among must-reads on this site.

Fuzzy Galore. Attention, attention—it’s a woman’s world; men just mope around in it. Blogger Rachel, “most often found cruising around on my 2005 Triumph Speed Triple,” writes better than the boys about her love of the motorcycle and the open road. This New Yorker chronicles her travels on this exceptional site, featuring such gem postings as Long Island: Octagon House, Stony Brook, New York. Ladies (and your fellas): read Rachel, and weep.

Art Car Central. Picasso, Van Gogh, Bob Rauschenberg: Most of the greatest artists of all time missed out on what was potentially the world’s most impressive canvas—the automobile. Professional and prolific are best used to describe this mind-blowingly original and addictive blog. What kind of material really turns you on in art: fiberglass, ink, hair, sound? The bloggers categorize the car art they scout out into groups of mediums such as these. Our favorite post was as juicy as it was judicial, when The Garden Art Car Goes to Court. It was swell enough to make you bang your gavel in cool contempt.
